2/17/09 Inclined planes: ancient Egyptian used inclined planes to build the great pyramids. This week we are looking at how inclined planes work and how effort is changed depending on characteristics of the slope.
Inclined plane list: create a list of as many inclined planes you can think of in modern everday use (pg. 111 in spiral). Examples given in class-- driveways, stairs, mountains, rollercoasters

Bullet Point Summary: on the back of 11.2 reflection questions, students should summarize Why Objects Look Colored in 5-7 bullet points. Students must use their own words and may not copy directly from the text. Due 1/13

Psolving signature: Parents should sign the bottom of the problem solving activity (Explaining the order of a set of numbers). Students have until Friday 1/16 to work on this problem solving and some time will be dedicated in class this week. Due 1/13

MATERIALS NEEDED: 1 Spiral notebook; pencils; pens; colored pencils; glue sticks; possible additions later in the year.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Learning depends on actively participating in science and social studies. Active engagement in hands-on, minds-on learning experiences enables students to make personal sense of the physical world and to solve problems. Hands-on activities and experiments will take place in the areas of Light Science, Energy, Machines, and Motion as well as Geography and Ancient Civilizations. We will focus specifically on the following Essential Academic Learning Requirements:
Science:
1: SYSTEMS: The student knows and applies scientific concepts and principles to understand the properties, structures and changes in physical, earth/space, and living systems.
2: INQUIRY: The student knows and applies the scientific ideas, skills, processes of investigation, and the nature of science.
3: APPLICATION: The student knows and applies science ideas and inquiry to design and analyze solutions to human problems in societal contexts.
Social Studies:
3: GEOGRAPHY - The student uses a spatial perspective to make reasoned decisions by applying the concepts of location, region, and movement and demonstrating knowledge of how geographic features and human cultures impact environments.
4: HISTORY - The student understands and applies knowledge of historical thinking, chronology, eras, turning points, major ideas, individuals, and themes on local, Washington State, tribal, United States, and world history in order to evaluate how history shapes the present and future.

GRADING POLICY
1. Daily Assignments, Class Activities, Homework & Notebooks (40%): Most Science/Social Studies work is done in class in science/social studies notebooks. Notebooks will be collected and assessed throughout the year.
2. Assessments/Quizzes (50%): Vocabulary and content quizzes will be given at the completion of each section.
3. Participation & Warm-ups (10%): Positive active participation is required in class! Disruptions, being unprepared and not using time wisely in class will not be tolerated!
