COURSE DESCRIPTION
Learning depends on actively participating in science and social studies. Active engagement in hands-on, minds-on learning experiences enables students to make personal sense of the physical world and to solve problems. Hands-on activities and experiments will take place in the areas of Light Science, Energy, Machines, and Motion as well as Geography and Ancient Civilizations. We will focus specifically on the following Essential Academic Learning Requirements:
Science:
1: SYSTEMS: The student knows and applies scientific concepts and principles to understand the properties, structures and changes in physical, earth/space, and living systems.
2: INQUIRY: The student knows and applies the scientific ideas, skills, processes of investigation, and the nature of science.
3: APPLICATION: The student knows and applies science ideas and inquiry to design and analyze solutions to human problems in societal contexts.
Social Studies:
3: GEOGRAPHY - The student uses a spatial perspective to make reasoned decisions by applying the concepts of location, region, and movement and demonstrating knowledge of how geographic features and human cultures impact environments.
4: HISTORY - The student understands and applies knowledge of historical thinking, chronology, eras, turning points, major ideas, individuals, and themes on local, Washington State, tribal, United States, and world history in order to evaluate how history shapes the present and future.

GRADING POLICY
1. Daily Assignments, Class Activities, Homework & Notebooks (40%): Most Science/Social Studies work is done in class in science/social studies notebooks. Notebooks will be collected and assessed throughout the year.
2. Assessments/Quizzes (50%): Vocabulary and content quizzes will be given at the completion of each section.
3. Participation & Warm-ups (10%): Positive active participation is required in class! Disruptions, being unprepared and not using time wisely in class will not be tolerated!

CLASSROOM GUIDELINES

GRADES

Grades and assignments are available online through a program called Family Access . Go to www.camas.wednet.edu, click on “Skyward Family Access” in the “Parent Corner” section. If you do not have Internet access, your student will have daily access to a classroom computer to check his or her grades at school. He or she may print out reports for you at any time. Students should review grades at least once per week. The final grade follows the Camas District Standard for Middle and High School grades:

A 100- 92.5 A- 92.49-89.5

B+ 89.49-86.5 B 86.49-82.5 B- 82.49-79.5

C+ 79.49-76.5 C 76.49-72.5 C- 72.49-69.5

D+ 69.49-66.5 D 64.49- 59.5

F 59.49 and below

HOMEWORK

Students will be assigned homework throughout the week. Generally, you should expect to see your student working on spelling, math, and reading at home. Spelling homework is assigned EVERY week and is always due on the last day of the week. Math will be assigned almost every day, but some time is given during class so that students begin working under the supervision of a teacher. It is our hope that students will work hard during the week and play hard on the weekends…so homework will be assigned over the weekends only on an occasional basis.

EXPECTATIONS

The expectation in ALL classrooms is that students will turn in assignments and projects on time. Any assignment not completed at or above your student's ability may be returned for him/her to redo. Extra credit is only accepted on RARE occasions. It will be considered only after ALL missing assignments have been turned in. Each student is responsible for proposing his/her extra credit ideas for approval. Accepted ideas are usually more rigorous than regular class work, so we encourage students to prevent the need for extra credit points by turning in well done work in a timely fashion. All assignments from the beginning of the grading period are organized and available to students. If your student has missing work, it is his/her duty to utilize the system. All core teachers (Morrisey/Smith/Washburn) have the same filing system. Students have been taught how to utilize this system. This is an important process that encourages students to become more independent and responsible. All work returned to students must be saved until after trimester grades have been received in the mail. PLEASE DO NOT throw away any of your student's work.

ABSENCES

If your student is going to be absent, contact the attendance office to complete the pre-arranged absence process. It is helpful to initiate this process a few days in advance of the planned absence. Core teachers also need at least two days notice if your student would like us to prepare the work that he/she can do independently. If the absence is due to an illness, contact the attendance office as soon as possible. When students return from any type of absence, it is their responsibility to take care of missing work. Until finished, absent work will be entered into the grade book as a zero. Students have ONE DAY for EACH DAY missed to turn in absent work.

MATERIALS

Part of your student’s participation grade is based on coming to class prepared with his/her supplies. It is required that your student bring the following supplies EACH day: (1) subject spirals (2) subject textbooks (3) pencil and pen (4) subject specific materials (for example, math = calculator/ruler and in LA = silent reading book). Please check with your student at the beginning of each grading period to see if he/she needs to replenish consumable supplies such as: notebook paper, erasers, pens, pencils, glue sticks, tape, colored pencils, etc. It is vital for students to show up with the materials needed. When supplies are missing, it is difficult for a student to complete work correctly and in a timely manner. As much as we appreciate those students who are willing to share their materials, it OFTEN ends up interfering with their learning as well. Due to a late lunch period, we would like to encourage students to eat HEALTHY snacks such as fresh fruit and vegetables. The general rule – if it comes in a package, it’s probably NOT okay to eat during class.
